Pay a visit to the Malindi Museum which has control over four main heritage sites: The Vasco da Gama Pillar, The Portuguese Chapel, The House of Columns, and The Heritage Complex museum.
The Heritage Complex museum contains various historical artifacts from Malindi. The Museum has exhibits containing traditional objects such as musical instruments, tools, and costumes.
The House of Columns contains artifacts related to the explorer Vasco da Gama, as well as exhibits from the Portuguese period of Kenya`s Coastal zone, and photographs of some of the country`s archaeological sites.
In the museum, you will learn about the ancient history of all these heritage sites. Pay a visit also to the Portuguese chapel the first Christian church in East Africa built in 1509, to cater for only 60 Portuguese present at the time. St Francis Xavier, a founding member of Jesus society visited Malindi in 1542, and buried one of his seamen at the chapel`s graveyard, on his way to India. Also, the colonial governor, Mr. J Bell Smith, was buried there after his murder on 1st September 1849.
Head to the Malindi Maasai Market for a chance to buy some African jewelry, souvenirs, and paintings among other items. You will also get a chance to walk to other local shops for local attire. Optionally you can sample local delicacies for lunch in the Swahili Dishes Restaurant. (Lunch on own account)
